MATCH POINTS
No. 1 seed Karolina Pliskova and No. 7 seed Petra Martic are the lone seeded players to make it to the semifinal stage, along with unseeded Ajla Tomljanovic and Kristina Mladenovic.
Martic is playing her first career semifinal on Chinese soil, with her best career result in China having been quarterfinal showings at the 2018 Tianjin Open and the 2011 Guangzhou Open.
The Croatian owns a 3-1 head-to-head edge over her semifinal foe in Mladenovic, including two wins this year on clay: a 6-2, 6-1 win at the French Open, and a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 win in Istanbul.
Martic has never reached a Premier-level final, while Mladenovic seeks to reach her first singles final of any kind in more than a year, having finished runner-up in St. Petersburg last February.
Pliskova is appearing in her sixth semifinal of the season against Tomljanovic, as she seeks her first appearance in a final since winning the Nature Valley International prior to Wimbledon.
Tomljanovic, 0-4 in her career in WTA finals and runner-up in Hua Hin in February, looks to score her second Top 10 victory of the tournament, as she defeated No. 3 seed and World No. 8 Kiki Bertens in the second round.
