No.1 seed Ashleigh Barty withdrew from the event on Tuesday due to a right arm injury. Lucky loser Diana Marcinkevica moved into her spot in the draw and will face 2017 Strasbourg runner-up Daria Gavrilova in the first round, in their first meeting.

Three former Strasbourg champions are in action on Wednesday: Monica Puig (2014), Caroline Garcia (2016), and Samantha Stosur (2015 and 2017).

Garcia and Shelby Rogers had their match interrupted on Monday at one set apiece, and were unable to resume on Tuesday due to inclement weather. Garcia and Rogers have met once before, in the first round of the 2013 US Open, which Garcia won, 6-3, 6-2.

Puig will face Astra Sharma in the second round, in their first meeting. Sharma made her first WTA singles final earlier this season in Bogota, and cracked the Top 100 for the first time shortly afterwards.

Stosur and Dayana Yastremska will square off for the second time. Yastremska won their only prior encounter at the 2019 Australian Open, when she knocked 2011 US Open champion Stosur out of the Aussie's home Grand Slam event in the first round in straight sets.
