Aryna Sabalenka won her only prior match with Kateryna Kozlova, in the quarterfinals of Tashkent in 2017. World No.10 Sabalenka is playing in Charleston for the first time.

2015 finalist Madison Keys takes a 2-0 head-to-head lead into her match with Tatjana Maria. This will be their first clash outside of a Grand Slam event -- Keys's two straight-set wins came at 2015 Wimbledon and the 2017 US Open.

2017 finalist Jelena Ostapenko won her only previous meeting with hometown favorite Shelby Rogers, which was a straight-set victory in Rome in 2017, just prior to Ostapenko's French Open title run.

Anastasija Sevastova reached the Charleston quarterfinals in 2017 and the semifinals last year, with a 6-5 win-loss record at the event overall. She beat Jessica Pegula in straight sets in their only prior encounter, at Indian Wells qualifying in 2016.

2014 Charleston champion Andrea Petkovic got past Maria Sakkari in their only previous matchup, a straight-set win in Madrid qualifying in 2017.
