MATCH POINTS

Garbiñe Muguruza defeated 2012 champion Timea Babos to win the Abierto GNP Seguros last year -- which was Muguruza's only title of 2018. Muguruza will face lucky loser Elena-Gabriela Ruse for the first time.

Angelique Kerber has made the Monterrey final in her last two appearances at the event, in 2013 and 2017. In both instances, she lost the championship match to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Kerber takes a 2-1 head-to-head lead into her first-round clash with qualifier Kristina Kucova.

Pavlyuchenkova has been outstanding in Monterrey throughout her career, winning the title four times (2010, 2011, 2013, and 2017) and compiling a stunning 22-2 win-loss record at the tournament. This is her first meeting with her fellow Russian Anna Blinkova.

Victoria Azarenka is playing the Monterrey event for the first time. It will also be her first time playing qualifier Miyu Kato.

Vive la difference! 14 titles, 14 winners in 2019 so far

Alison Riske will face Sachia Vickery in an all-American affair; Riske won their only prior match in three sets, at a clay-court Challenger event in Florida in 2013. Last year in Monterrey, Riske lost in the second round to eventual champion Muguruza, while Vickery made it all the way to the semifinals before losing to runner-up Babos.

Lucky loser Greta Arn will turn 40 years old in less than two weeks. The Hungarian, who peaked at World No.40 and won two WTA singles titles, is about 18 months into her return to professional tennis after a roughly four-year retirement from 2013 to 2017.
