17-year-old Anastasia Potapova has reached the final in two of the seven WTA main draws she has competed in, coming runner-up at the Moscow River Cup to Olga Danilovic last July and in Tashkent to Margarita Gasparyan in September. Her opponent today, Heather Watson, is searching for her first WTA main draw win since reaching the Québec City semifinals in September.

Former World No.20 Ana Konjuh is playing her first WTA main draw since Wimbledon. The Croat played just four tournaments in 2018 due to elbow surgery in March; she has compiled a 1-3 record since returning from a seven-month hiatus last month, losing in St. Petersburg qualifying to Anna Kalinskaya, defeating Mariam Bolkvadze and losing to Cagla Buyukakcay in Fed Cup Group 1 zonal play and falling to Tereza Martincova in the first round of the Trnava ITF W25 event.

Arantxa Rus's only previous encounter with Fiona Ferro was also on indoor hard courts - in the semifinals of the Andrézieux-Bouthéon ITF W60 event last February, won by Rus 6-1, 6-0.

Both No.6 seed Andrea Petkovic and Ana Bogdan are searching for their first main draw win of 2019. Bogdan is 0-3 this year so far, while Petkovic lost via retirement in her only main draw match (at the Australian Open), but has picked up three wins across qualifying in Brisbane and St. Petersburg.

In qualifying, 39-year-old Greta Arn is bidding to make her first WTA-level main draw since the 2013 Australian Open. The former World No.40 retired after losing in Wimbledon qualifying in 2013, but returned to the game in July 2017 and won the Saguenay ITF W60 event that year; she is currently ranked World No.443.
