Virginie Razzano beat Kiki Bertens in the qualifying, but Bertens had some wins coming.

In another final round of qualifying match, Magdalena Rybarikova got past Caroline Garcia.

Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci won the Australian Open and have continued their streak here.

Alize Cornet and Kristina Mladenovic were the Italian duo's first victims, losing 61 62.

Klara Zakopalova won nine games in a row from 62 54 down to beat Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Mladenovic's singles campaign got off to a surprising start against No.7 seed Julia Goerges.

Mladenovic beat the World No.19 in a thriller for the best win of her career to date.

There was no such luck for Simona Halep though, falling to No.5 seed Vinci.

Christina McHale was close against No.3 seed Marion Bartoli but fell in straight sets.

Bartoli survived four set points down 5-4 in the first set then went on a tear to win, 75 61.

Swiss qualifier Stefanie Voegele also provided some early resistance against a top seed.

But Petra Kvitova, the No.2 seed, edged her in the first set and would up winning, 76(5) 63.
