MATCH POINTS

Former World No.9 Timea Bacsinszky and former World No.30 Misaki Doi both ended long droughts in the first round, with the Swiss player capturing her first WTA win in 16 months, since Wimbledon 2017, when Danielle Collins retired, and the Japanese player tasting victory in a WTA main draw for the first time in 17 months, since Nurnberg 2017, after saving a match point to defeat Yulia Putintseva - and now Bacsinszky and Doi face off for the first time for a quarterfinal place.

Qualifier Barbora Krejcikova takes on Katie Boulter for the first time in the pro ranks, having defeated the Briton in their only junior meeting - in the first round of the 2013 Wimbledon warm-up in Roehampton, 7-6(5), 7-6(3). Boulter, currently at a career high of World No.101, is seeking to break the Top 100 for the first time.

No.2 seed Caroline Garcia is making just her second appearance at International level since July 2017. The Frenchwoman has not reached a final since her sweep of the Wuhan and Beijing titles last year, but she has compiled a solid 33-21 record in 2018 with two semifinals, seven quarterfinals and second-week showings at two Grand Slams.

Qualifier Zhang Yuxuan made her WTA-level debut at the 2013 Australian Open, having defeated Chang Kai-Chen and Wang Qiang to win the inaugural Asia-Pacific Wildcard Playoff, and stretched Zheng Jie to three sets in her first-round loss. Zhang would pick up her maiden WTA main draw win in Kaohsiung in 2016; her defeat of Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round this week was her first since then, and her career-best win in terms of ranking.
