MATCH POINTS

2016 Toray Pan Pacific Open finalist and No.3 seed Naomi Osaka will play her first event since being crowned US Open champion. The first-ever player to win a Grand Slam singles title while representing Japan has a first-round bye before facing either Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia or her compatriot, qualifier Nao Hibino, in the second round.

As for the US Open doubles champions, Ashleigh Barty of Australia and CoCo Vandeweghe of the United States emerged victorious, which was the first Grand Slam doubles title for either player. However, they will face off against each other in the first round of the singles event in Tokyo later this week. Vandeweghe won their only prior encounter, in Zhuhai last year by the scoreline of 6-3, 6-3.

Garbiñe Muguruza and Belinda Bencic have played each other only once before, and it was in Tokyo in 2015. Bencic won that quarterfinal match, when both players were ranked in the Top 15. Bencic then beat Caroline Wozniacki to reach the final, where she finally succumbed to Agnieszka Radwanska.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich enters the Toray Pan Pacific Open at a career-high ranking of No.30, having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and the third round at the US Open for career-best results at those two tournaments. Sasnovich takes on last year's runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Monday; Pavlyuchenkova won their only prior meeting, in Miami earlier this year.

Anett Kontaveit has won both of her matches against Kristina Mladenovic, although each one was a three-set tussle, including a first-round tilt in Stuttgart this year that was decided by a final-set tiebreak.

Daria Gavrilova has a 2-0 head-to-head record against wild card Kristyna Pliskova, but both of those wins came in three sets as well. Those two meetings each took place in the second half of last year, at New Haven and Moscow.
