This is the 10th year of the WTA tournament at Madrid. Six different players have won the singles title at Madrid. Simona Halep (2016-17), Petra Kvitova (2011, 2015), and Serena Williams (2012-13) are the only multiple winners.

The draw features three former champions: Simona Halep (defending champion), Petra Kvitova, and
Maria Sharapova. All eight former Madrid runners-up are in the draw: Kristina Mladenovic, Dominika Cibulkova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Simona Halep, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki.

At just 15 years of age, Marta Kostyuk is the youngest player in the field, having received a wild card into the main draw. The Ukrainian, who won the junior Australian Open in 2017 and reached the third round of the Australian Open main draw this year, faces fellow wild card Lara Arruabarrena in the first round here.

Kostyuk will be succeeded on Manolo Santana Court by the oldest player in the draw: Venus Williams. The 2010 Madrid finalist is 37 years of age.

Wang Qiang reached the round of 16 as a qualifier here last year, and received direct entry into the main draw this year. A qualifier has reached the last 16 or better five times in tournament history.

Last year's runner-up, Kristina Mladenovic, faces a familiar foe in the first round. She and CoCo Vandeweghe have faced off six times previously; Vandeweghe has a 4-2 lead in the head-to-head, but Mladenovic has won the last two matches, including a three-set victory at Fed Cup a few weeks ago.
