After winning her second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in commanding fashion, Simona Halep was a landslide winner of another trophy: the July Player of the Month fan vote.

The Romanian became the first woman from her country to win a Wimbledon title as she lost just one set across the fortnight in July, culminating with what she called the "best match of her life" over Serena Williams in the final.

She returned the Top 5 in the WTA rankings as a result, and returns to action this week at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, facing Jennifer Brady in the second round and partnering Canadian teenager Leylah Annie Fernandez in the doubles.

The Romanian topped the monthly poll for the first time this season, beating out Wimbledon runner-up Serena Williams and other title-winners in Anastasija Sevastova and Jil Teichmann.
