MATCH POINTS

Top-ranked Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia claimed the Strasbourg title in 2016, defeating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the final. The No.4 seed has a 7-2 main-draw record at the tournament, having also reached the semifinals in 2017.

Garcia and Shelby Rogers have met once before, in the first round of the 2013 US Open. Garcia won that tilt, 6-3, 6-2. Rogers is playing only her third WTA event since returning to action in Charleston in April, after missing nearly a year due to injury.

2015 and 2017 Strasbourg champion Samantha Stosur is the oldest player to receive direct entry into the main draw, at age 35. The Australian is 13-2 at Strasbourg overall, but she has lost her only prior meeting against her first-round opponent, Jessica Pegula. Pegula beat Stosur in the Washington quarterfinals in 2016.

2014 Strasbourg champion Monica Puig takes a 1-0 head-to-head lead into her match against Tatjana Maria. Puig beat Maria in three sets in the Charleston round of 16 in 2011. Puig defeated Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the 2014 Strasbourg final for her first WTA singles title.

Twelve months ago, Sofia Kenin was ranked only just inside the Top 100, but she won her first WTA singles title in Hobart in January, and then reached another final in Acapulco one month later. Kenin is now perched safely inside the Top 50, and this week is seeded at a WTA event for a fourth time. She will face Chloe Paquet in their first meeting.
