Svetlana Kuznetsova has won all four of her meetings with Timea Bacsinszky in their careers. The former Top 10 players, both currently ranked outside of the Top 100 due to injury struggles, have not faced each other since 2016.
This will be the first time Alison van Uytvanck and Fiona Ferro square off. Budapest champion Van Uytvanck is the only person still active in both Lugano and Bogota who could win her second singles title of the year this week. If the Belgian does not win the Lugano championship, we are guaranteed 18 different titlists in the first 18 events of the season.
Veronika Kudermetova has beaten Jil Teichmann in their only previous meeting, which also came in Switzerland -- Kudermetova won in three sets in the first round of Gstaad last year. Their encounter is the last first-round match to be contested this week.
Sorana Cirstea takes a 3-1 head-to-head lead into her clash with Polona Hercog, including both meetings on clay. Hercog, however, won their most recent match, in Beijing last year.
In an all-Swiss affair, Stefanie Voegele holds the head-to-head edge over Viktorija Golubic, having won their only prior meeting, at a Challenger event in France in 2016.
