50 Days Out: Who will qualify for Singapore?
We're just 50 days away from the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, and the Porsche Race to Singapore remains a hotly contested affair.
Heading into the US Open, World No.3 and reigning Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza is in pole position, as she sits atop the PRTS Leaderboard with 5,068 points, with World No.2 Simona Halep right behind her with 5015 points. On the doubles front, two teams have secured qualification, with the team of Martina Hingis and Chan Yung-jan as well as last year's champions Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova.
Here's how the Porsche Race to Singapore Leaderboard looks as the singles race comes down to the wire:
The 2017 season has seen a fascinating combination of a diversity in tournament champions, while a smaller core group of women have dominated the tour's biggest events. Across the board, there have been 32 different title winners this year, across 43 events. In addition, at the six biggest events this season – the Slams and Premier Mandatories – there have been six different champions from six different countries:
Australian Open: Serena Williams (USA)
Indian Wells: Elena Vesnina (RUS)
Miami: Johanna Konta (GBR)
Madrid: Simona Halep (ROU)
Roland Garros: Jelena Ostapenko (LAT)
Wimbledon: Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP)
While the players near the top of the Leaderboard are closing in on qualification, no singles player has qualified for the WTA Finals, yet. Here is a breakdown of the point totals for the eighth qualifier since 2010. French Open champion Ostapenko, currently in the eighth position, has already accumulated 3,364 points heading into the US Open.
