MATCH FACTS

Ekaterina Makarova and Julia Goerges meet for the second time - the Russian prevailing in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in their previous match, in the last 16 of the Australian Open two years ago.

Ekaterina Makarova has made it to the final in Washington for the first time, having previously fallen at the semifinal stage three times. She was beaten by eventual champions Magdalena Rybarikova and Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2013 and 2014 respectively, before retiring hurt from her last-four encounter with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in 2015.

Whilst this is Ekaterina Makarova's first WTA final of the year, Julia Goerges is taking part in her third. The German lost in the Mallorca Open showpiece to Anastasija Sevastova in June and to Irina-Camelia Begu in the BRD Bucharest Open last month.

Julia Goerges is enjoying her best showing at the Citi Open, having made a first-round exit, to Taylor Townsend, in her only previous Washington appearance, three years ago.

Ekaterina Makarova has dropped two sets en route to the final, beating two seeds - Simona Halep and Océane Dodin - while Julia Goerges has also dropped two sets, but beaten just one seed - Monica Niculescu in the quarterfinal.

The Citi Open has never been won by a German player - Andrea Petkovic coming closest, losing in the 2013 final. Ekaterina Makarova hopes to follow Nadia Petrova (2011) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (2014) and become Russia's third female champion in Washington.

Svetlana Kuznetsova's victory over Kurumi Nara in 2014 was the only one of six previous finals to go to three sets.
