MATCH POINTS

No.6 seed Wang Qiang has competed in 11 of the past 12 weeks, with her schedule taking her from China at the end of July to North America, then to Indonesia for the Asian Games and back across the Pacific Ocean for the US Open before embarking on the Asian swing. In that period, the 26-year-old has racked up 24 Tour wins (plus five in winning gold at the Asian Games) to just six losses.

Lesley Kerkhove is on a 13-match winning streak, having won back-to-back ITF $25,000 trophies in Lisbon and Clermont-Ferrand last month before coming through qualifying here to make her first WTA main draw of the season. The No.200-ranked Dutchwoman's first-round win over compatriot Bibiane Schoofs was her first at WTA level since she made the Kuala Lumpur quarterfinals last year.

Monica Niculescu is bidding to win back-to-back WTA main draw matches for the first time since Miami today against last year's runner-up, No.7 seed Daria Gavrilova. The Romanian suffered a hip injury during the clay swing; having compiled a 19-8 record in 2018 up to that point, she has gone just 4-9 since her return in June. It will be her first encounter against Gavrilova.

Zhang Shuai dispatched Lesley Kerkhove 6-1, 6-2 in the pair's only previous meeting, in the first round of Charleston in 2016.

No.1 seed Elina Svitolina has never played Nao Hibino before - but they were scheduled to meet in the second round of Kuala Lumpur last year. The Ukrainian was forced to give a walkover due to injury, and Hibino went on to reach her third WTA final.
