FLUSHING, NY, USA:  Women That Achieve was the theme for the 2018 Billie Jean King Power Hour where current and former WTA players met with Billie Jean King - a living legend and founder of the WTA.

Billie Jean King harnessed the WTA’s current brand campaign, Women That Achieve, to emphasize that success is multi-dimensional and that celebration of all facets of the player builds a powerful, sustainable culture.  Billie Jean stressed that champions have the desire to learn and grow every single day; the ability to problem-solve both on and off the court; and take personal responsibility for the growth of the sport.

“The more you know about history, the more you know about yourself.” Billie Jean explained that the WTA was created by the sacrifice of the Original 9  to create a platform for players all over the world to have a place to compete; to be recognized for their achievements as professional athletes; and to have financial security at the end of their playing careers.  Mentors in the room shared their invaluable perspectives, highlighting the challenges and opportunities when transition throughout career stages and beyond.

Reflecting on this year’s Power Hour, WTA player member and current players’ council representative Julia Boserup shares: “Billie Jean is an amazing leader and pioneer for women’s professional tennis.  We are extremely fortunate to have her as a role model.  Her experiences and insight, energy and passion are infectious.  The Power Hour is an incredible opportunity for us to ask questions and explore how we can grow as athletes, women, and leaders both on and off the court.”

It was the 21st edition of the WTA’s mentoring program and once again provided a valuable forum for players to engage with one another, learn about the WTA’s history, vision and how each athlete has the opportunity to be a part of growing the game for all generations.
