MATCH POINTS
Halep was the champion here in 2016 and 2017.
Kvitova and Sharapova are also previous winners of this tournament.
Kvitova was the youngest ever champion in Madrid when she won back in 2011 at the age of 21 years and two months.
She was also the last champion ranked outside the Top 10, then World No.19.
The player seeded No.1 has won the title here only twice - most recently in 2013 when Serena Williams beat Sharapova in the final.
Rybarikova and Konta have played twice before - both times on grass, both times in Nottingham, and the British No.1 has won both matches in straight sets.
Strycova and Suarez Navarro have met seven times previously, six times on clay courts - and the Spaniard leads their head-to-head 6-1.
Buzarnescu and Sharapova met for the first time only a few weeks ago - in Shenzhen, when the Russian won 6-3, 6-0 in the Round of 32.
