MIAMI, FL, USA - Ashleigh Barty and CoCo Vandeweghe completed their fairytale week at the Miami Open, winning the title, 6-2, 6-1 over Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in just their second tournament as a team.
Barty and Vandeweghe closed out the Miami Open's tenure at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne, completing a week of scintillating tennis with an emphatic victory over the No.6-seeded Czechs.
"We really appreciate you sticking around to support women's doubles," Barty said during the trophy ceremony. "We've had an amazing two weeks and a phenomenal tournament, so it's so nice to be out here on the final Sunday."
The unseeded duo came out firing after a long men's final, dropping just six points behind their first serves and breaking serve five times to wrap up their first title together in just 62 minutes.
"CoCo, it's been a hell of a start to our partnership. Hopefully we can have a few more tournaments out here and a few more titles behind us."
Krejcikova and Siniakova were playing their second final together of 2018, also finishing runner-up at the Shenzhen Open. Krejcikova admitted to feeling under the weather ahead of Sunday's championship match and apologized to the crowd for her performance.
"I've been battling a virus since Friday. I was lying in bed all day yesterday, and stepped out and tried my best today. I couldn't bring my best, and for that I'm really sorry. Ashleigh and CoCo played really well all week and I wish them luck for the rest of the season."
Barty and Vandeweghe paired up for the first time at this year's BNP Paribas Open, and knocked out three seeds en route to the title, including reigning Australian Open champions Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic and top seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
Barty qualified for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global alongside countrywoman Casey Dellacqua, and will move up to a career-high doubles ranking of No.7 on Monday.
