No.2 seed Veronika Kudermetova has enjoyed a fine 2019 season to date, reaching the quarterfinals or better at five tournaments and rising over 50 places in the rankings to her current position of World No.48. Kudermetova beat Varvara Lepchenko in their only prior meeting, in Stuttgart qualifying on clay in 2018.

Alison van Uytvanck has won her sole previous meeting with fellow Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure, on the clay courts of Rabat earlier this season, in a three-set quarterfinal clash.
