This is the 11th staging of the Hana-Cupid Japan Women's Open and the second year in a row where it will be held in Hiroshima.
Zarina Diyas won the title in 2017, when it was played in Tokyo, and she was also the runner-up in 2014, when it took place in Osaka. Diyas's overall win-loss record at the event is 18-7. She will face Danka Kovinic in their first meeting.
No.2 seed Veronika Kudermetova has enjoyed a fine 2019 season to date, reaching the quarterfinals or better at five tournaments and rising over 50 places in the rankings to her current position of World No.48. Kudermetova beat Varvara Lepchenko in their only prior meeting, in Stuttgart qualifying on clay in 2018.
Alison van Uytvanck has won her sole previous meeting with fellow Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure, on the clay courts of Rabat earlier this season, in a three-set quarterfinal clash.
