Former WTA World No.5 Lucie Safarova has taken to social media to announce that she is pregnant.

The 32-year-old Czech, who reached the final of the 2015 French Open in singles and won five Grand Slam doubles titles, retired from the Tour in May after Roland-Garros.

“When I finished my career I was thinking if I would miss the happiness of winning… Now I know there is a much greater happiness in life! When I first saw the pumping heart of our baby on ultrasound it beat everything!” she posted on social media along with a picture of her and partner Tomas Plekanec.

The ex-NHL star similarly delivered the good news via Instagram: “Another big chapter… Very happy we are expecting a baby with Lucie Safarova! I went through lots of ups and downs in my hockey career and in my life.

“Not everything went as I planned to, but when you get through it something nice comes up!”

Speaking to iDNES, Plekanec said: “I already have two boys, so maybe it would be nice to have a baby girl, but we don’t know yet and of course we don’t care. We’re very happy.”

According to the Czech source, Safarova knew about her pregnancy as she reached the doubles final in Stuttgart where she went down with partner Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to Mona Barthel and Anna-Lena Friedsam, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6.
