No.4 seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova returned to the Top 100 by winning her third career title here last year, and opens her defence with a first encounter against Ysaline Bonaventure.

17-year-old wildcard Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, who made her WTA main draw debut here last year, was also the runner-up at ITF Junior Masters and the singles bronze medallist at the Youth Olympic Games in 2018. Today, the Colombian faces the same opponent whom she took on in her WTA qualifying debut as a 14-year-old wildcard here in 2016 - Conny Perrin, who won that match 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-2.

Former World No.12 Sabine Lisicki has taken a third WTA main draw wildcard this season following Hua Hin and Charleston, but is yet to win a match in 2019 and has not won a set in her past five matches. The German faces 17-year-old Amanda Anisimova in the first round, with the American seeded in a WTA tournament for the first time in her career at No.6.

Laura Siegemund is 2-0 against Beatriz Haddad Maia, with both victories coming in ITF clay events in 2013: the German took the Lenzerheide final 6-2, 6-3 and their Vaihingen quarterfinal 7-5, 6-4.
