Defending champion Alison Van Uytvanck is into the second round after defeating former World No.2 Vera Zvonareva in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.
With the current event only it its third edition, Van Uytvanck is seeking to become Budapest’s first repeat champion. Hometown hero Timea Babos claimed the inaugural title back in 2017.
In fact, a Hungarian player has been victorious in both of the previous Budapest stagings: in 2018, Fanny Stollar claimed the doubles title with partner Georgina Garcia Perez. Stollar was knocked out of singles by Madison Brengle, but she’s still alive in doubles, where she’s teamed up with Britain’s Heather Watson.
Babos and Stollar continue the legacy of Hungary’s Agnes Szavay, who also won this tournament back in 2009 and 2010 when it was held as an outdoor clay event.

Qualifier Iga Swiatek is seeking her first WTA Top 50 win against Van Uytvanck. The 17-year-old from Poland is contesting her first WTA main draw event - earlier in the season Swiatek successfully qualified for her first Grand Slam at the Australian Open, winning her first-round match before falling to Camila Giorgi in straight sets.
Three seeded players are in action today: in addition to top seeded Van Uytvanck, No.5 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and No.8 Marketa Vondrousova are set to take the court.
Alexandrova is seeking a spot in her second WTA quarterfinal of the season, after her run at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, which ended in a straight sets loss to Aryna Sabalenka. Meanwhile, Vondrousova is contesting her second tournament of the year - she fell in the second round against Petra Martic at the Australian Open.
