MATCH POINTS

Petra Kvitova will face Jennifer Brady for the first time. On Tuesday, Brady got her second win over Caroline Garcia in the last month (also in the first round of Hua Hin) to reach the Dubai round of 16 as a qualifier.

Simona Halep has a 6-0 head-to-head record against Lesia Tsurenko. They played last week in the Doha round of 16, where Halep won 6-2, 6-3.

Halep made her debut in the Top 10 on January 27, 2014, and she has remained there ever since. Her 265-week stay makes her the Top 10’s longest current resident and puts her within touching distance of the record among active players of 293 weeks, set by Venus Williams from March 30, 1998 to November 10, 2003.

Two-time defending champion Elina Svitolina got her 14th match win in Dubai after Ons Jabeur retired from their match on Tuesday. Only four active players have more match wins in Dubai than Svitolina: Caroline Wozniacki (22), Jelena Jankovic (21), Venus Williams (19), and Svetlana Kuznetsova (19).

Garbiñe Muguruza will try to prevent Svitolina from attaining an 11th consecutive win in Dubai. Svitolina holds a slim 4-3 head-to-head lead over Muguruza, but the two have not played each other since the Rogers Cup in Toronto in 2017.

Aryna Sabalenka won her only prior meeting against Belinda Bencic, in the quarterfinals of last year's Connecticut Open in New Haven, 6-3, 6-2. Sabalenka went on to win that New Haven title, which was her first WTA singles championship.

Angelique Kerber is 2-0 against Hsieh Su-wei, but both of those matches have gone three sets. Their last match came at the 2018 Australian Open, where Hsieh was only three points from victory before Kerber fought back to obtain the win.
