CENTRE COURT -- 3:00 p.m. start
Maria SAKKARI (GRE) vs. Johanna KONTA (GBR)
The 2019 Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem final is set, where Johanna Konta and Maria Sakkari will square off for the second time. In their only prior meeting, Konta defeated Sakkari, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of Wimbledon in 2017.
23-year-old Sakkari is into her second career WTA singles final, and her first final on clay, without dropping a set. The World No.51 from Greece made her first singles final in San Jose last year, which she lost to Mihaela Buzarnescu, 6-1, 6-0.
Sakkari defeated top seed and defending champion Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals this week. Sakkari also knocked out defending champion Kiki Bertens en route to her only other quarterfinal of the season, at Charleston last month.
Konta, winner of three WTA singles titles, is into her first final in nearly a year, since falling to Ashleigh Barty in the championship match on the grass of Nottingham last season. This is Konta's first-ever clay-court final.
27-year-old Konta had to fend off three match points in her first-round win over Wang Yafan earlier in the week. She becomes the fourth player in 2019 to reach a final after saving match point, along with Julia Goerges in Hobart, Belinda Bencic in Dubai, and Alison van Uytvanck in Budapest. Each of those player would go on to win their finals.
Konta is currently ranked World No.47 and has reached a career-high ranking of World No.4, following her run to the Wimbledon semifinals in 2017.
