Suárez Navarro Wins Award In Spain
Spanish Tennis Writers Association awards ceremony

Spanish No.1 Carla Suárez Navarro was honored with the Special Award by the Spanish Tennis Writers Association (APT) at a gala at the Heredat Segura Viudas in Barcelona.

The best season of Suárez Navarro's career was highlighted by runner-up showings in Acapulco and Oeiras, a quarterfinal appearance at the US Open, a rise to a career-high No.14 on the rankings in September and a spot in the season-ending Top 20 for the first time.

"The US Open left me with a good taste in my mouth," Suárez Navarro said about her run at Flushing Meadows that included a fourth round defeat of then-World No.8 Angelique Kerber. "My first few matches were very intense, and that helped me clear my head before taking on Kerber. That was my most important match of the week and I was able to do enough to turn things around in the final set after having gone behind. That victory was a small step in the right direction for me. But I don't want to be content with just reaching the quarterfinals. I need to continue working hard to improve."

The APT also named the ATP World Tour's Tommy Robredo as its Player Of The Year and Pablo Carreño as its Most Improved Player, while also holding tributes to Sergi Bruguera and WTA great Conchita Martínez.

The APT and one of its major sponsors, Segura Viudas, has recognized Spanish tennis players each year since 1998.
