Halep promises poutine excursion in Montreal

MONTRÉAL, Canada - World No.1 Simona Halep has long been open about her penchant for chocolate, but the Romanian may have found a new post-match snack at the Coupe Rogers after a 6-2, 6-2 win over Venus Williams.

Asked about poutine, the popular québécois delicacy consisting of french fries, cheese curds and gravy, the reigning Roland Garros champion admitted she'd never heard of it.

"Who?" she asked to the amusement of those attending her late-night press conference.

Once it was properly described, Halep mused:

"I like how it sounds."

Warned about the calorie count, she countered, "That's okay, I had a pancake last night. Tonight I will have two."

A nutella crêpe is her typical go-to dessert, as evidenced by a video she posted to Instagram where coach Darren Cahill offered one up as a reward.

Delayed by a rainstorm on Wednesday evening, Halep emerged to complete her first two victories since Wimbledon all in one day: first over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three hours, and second over Williams to book a quarterfinal clash with No.6 seed Caroline Garcia.

"We don't play very often two matches in a day," she said after the match. "But today I just chilled, I just stayed on the couches in players lounge. I tried to sleep. I couldn't. I rested.

"I felt great on court, and also the atmosphere gave me energy. I felt like I'm enjoying the time on court. That's why maybe I played well."

(No word on whether Garcia has indulged in any poutine this week).
