Former World No.9 Timea Bacsinszky takes on Prague champion Jil Teichmann in an all-Swiss first-round derby. It is six years since the pair's only previous meeting - in very different circumstances. In February 2013, Bacsinszky was still several months off making her full-time comeback to the Tour from bar and restaurant work, but reached the final of her home ITF $10,000 event in Kreuzlingen (losing to future Top 50 player Ekaterina Alexandrova). In the second round, she defeated a 15-year-old Teichmann, who was playing her second professional event, 6-1, 6-1.

No.4 seed Mihaela Buzarnescu's head-to-head against home hope Stefanie Voegele is tied at 1-1, with both matches going the distance. The Swiss won their 2012 Australian Open qualifying tilt 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, but Buzarnescu won their second-round encounter in last year's Midland ITF W100 event 1-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Defending champion Alizé Cornet, who won the tournament in its 2018 location in Gstaad, gets under way against Martina Trevisan today. The Frenchwoman has never successfully defended a title, and has only once won trophies in consecutive years (Bad Gastein 2012 and Strasbourg 2013).

No.1 seed Julia Goerges opens against wildcard Simona Waltert, who is making her WTA main draw debut. The 18-year-old Waltert is a former junior World No.9 who has won four ITF World Tour titles and is ranked World No.562.

No.5 seed Tatjana Maria is 1-0 against qualifier Allie Kiick, having defeated the American 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of Cincinnati last year.
