For the first time in its history, the Nature Valley Classic will feature the players ranked World No.1, No.2 and No.3: Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, and Karolina Pliskova.

Pliskova brings a 3-0 head-to-head lead into her first-round tilt with Mihaela Buzarnescu. The Czech's first two wins over the Romanian came on grass courts, both of which went three sets. Pliskova won their most recent clash in straight sets, on hardcourt in Fed Cup earlier this season.
Pliskova's best showing at Birmingham is a runner-up result against Angelique Kerber in 2015, while Buzarnescu reached the semifinals last year in her tournament debut, falling to Petra Kvitova in the final four.

British No.1 Johanna Konta will meet Anett Kontaveit in a first-round tussle between Top 20 players. Konta won their only prior encounter in three sets, at Acapulco in 2016.
Konta, who returned to the Top 20 after her Roland Garros semifinal run, has never been beyond the second round at Birmingham, falling at that stage on five of her six visits.
Hsieh Su-wei has won her only previous meeting against Aryna Sabalenka, in straight sets on the clay courts of Rome in 2018.
