Former World No.45 Anna-Lena Friedsam's latest comeback has begun to click this weekend. The German first underwent shoulder surgery in 2016 and was sidelined for 13 months; after returning for eight tournaments, she was forced to have a second operation and to miss another 10 months. In qualifying, the 25-year-old wildcard scored her best win since 2016 over No.1 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova before saving a match point to defeat Antonia Lottner. Friedsam is 0-1 against her final qualifying opponent, Tereza Smitkova: the Czech won 7-6(4), 6-4 in Nurnberg qualifying in 2013.

Two-time Grand Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva takes on fellow mother Mandy Minella with a spot in the main draw at stake today. Since returning from maternity leave in 2017, the Russian has played against another mother twice, retiring against Kateryna Bondarenko in the 2017 Tashkent semifinals but defeating Tatjana Maria in last year's Limoges 125K quarterfinals. Minella, who came back to the sport in February last year after giving birth to daughter Emma Lina, lost her only all-mother clash to Olga Govortsova in Australian Open qualifying in January. Minella and Zvonareva have neevr played each other before.

Giulia Gatto-Monticone, who cracked the Top 200 for the first time and hit a career high of World No.165 last week at the age of 31, will bid to make her Premier main draw debut today against Greet Minnen. The Italian leads the head-to-head 1-0, having defeated Minnen 7-5, 6-4 to win her third ITF W25 trophy (out of four to date) in Obidos last year.

Sara Sorribes Tormo is 1-0 against Anna Zaja, having beaten the German 6-3, 6-4 in Wuhan qualifying last year.
