INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - Wildcard Bianca Andreescu's fairytale debut at the BNP Paribas Open continued with a second consecutive Top 20 upset, this time an astonishing rout of No.20 seed Garbiñe Muguruza 6-0, 6-1 in just 52 minutes.

The result seals the 18-year-old's third and biggest semifinal of the season so far, following her breakthrough run to the Auckland final and appearance in the last four of Acapulco two weeks ago. For Andreescu, who began the year ranked World No.152, it also marks her fourth career Top 20 win - and second in a row following her defeat of No.18 seed Wang Qiang in the previous round - and extends her 2019 win-loss record to an incredible 26-3 (13-3 in WTA main draws). In Monday's rankings, the teenager will be firmly inside the Top 40 in the world.

Perfect placement and point construction finishing with a clean dropshot winner showcased both Andreescu's skill and intent in the first game, and the Canadian continued to impress in every aspect of the game as she put together a remarkable 23-minute opening set. Mixing up spin and pace began to elicit Muguruza errors in the next game, but Andreescu was also unafraid to take bold cuts at the ball, breaking immediately with a blitzing backhand return.

If anything, the teenager pressed her foot to the floor even more as the set flew past, demonstrating a keen scoreboard awareness and instinct for what she needed to do to sustain momentum. Having saved break point in the fifth game - the only game point Muguruza would reach in the first set - Andreescu put the service game to bed with a forehand crosscourt winner; returning for the set, she upped the ante on her forehand, blasting two high-risk winners past the Spaniard.

On her first set point, Andreescu displayed her rounded game again, defending brilliantly with the backhand slice before powering a drive backhand winner the second she got a shorter ball to attack herself, sealing a set in which she had conceded a miserly nine points.

The World No.60's razor-sharp form continued in the second set. In the second game, Muguruza was on the verge of belatedly getting off the mark as she built a 40-0 lead on serve - only to beckon Andreescu back in with a brace of errors. The youngster needed no further encouragement, reaching break point with another brilliantly constructed dropshot-pass combination and seizing the break with a booming return.

The two-time Slam champion finally snapped the run of nine games against her with an ace to hold for 1-3, but little could stop Andreescu accelerating to victory on her biggest stage yet.

Consecutive bold inside-in forehand winners broke Muguruza for a fifth time to move up 5-1, and an efficient one-two punch - her 16th winner of the day - closed out the match on her first match point.

For Muguruza, the result will be a disappointment coming so soon after a high-quality statement victory over No.7 seed Kiki Bertens - as will an unfortunate ratio of six winners to 26 unforced errors over just 13 games. The 25-year-old will perhaps be comforted by the fact that the last time she lost so heavily, a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Barbora Strycova in the second round of Eastbourne in 2017, she followed it up the following week by winning her second major at Wimbledon.

But for Andreescu, who will face either No.6 seed Elina Svitolina or fellow teenager Marketa Vondrousova in the semifinals, it's no longer a dream - but the reality of a legitimate new threat in the sport.
