The 23- time Grand Slam champion delivered her speech with her characteristic elegance, drawing on her own personal experience of trying to make it to the top of her chosen field.

“When we're young, we all have dreams of what we can accomplish in life,” she said. “Having the dream is easy. Making it come true is hard.”

After completing her formal duties, she left for the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, where she was joined by Maria Sharapova, who has been a regular at the event over the years.

Sunday was not quite so glamorous for all of the WTA stars, however.

Caroline Wozniacki was back at work on court after a viral infection, which she saw the funny side of as she joked about changing her travel outfit last week.

Meanwhile, CoCo Vandeweghe, who is another player on her way to fitness after a period away from the game, has apparently been honing her skills at Jenga.

And finally, Sabine Lisicki showed off a new look that has brought a smile to her face.
