No.3 seed Dayana Yastremska takes on 2016 champion Peng Shuai - the only former Tianjin winner remaining in the draw - for the second time this season. Yastremska triumphed 6-1, 6-4 in their only previous meeting in the second round of Hua Hin en route to her second career title.

Qualifier Kurumi Nara leads the head-to-head against No.8 seed Magda Linette 3-1, having won three-setters in the second round of Kuala Lumpur 2015 and the first round of the 2017 Southsea ITF 100K event, as well as a victory via retirement in the first round of Wimbledon 2015. However, Linette captured her first win over the Japanese No.4 in their most recent meeting, 6-2, 6-2 in New Haven qualifying in 2017. Today, former World No.32 Nara is bidding for her first Top 50 win since defeating Kristyna Pliskova in the second round of Tashkent 2017.

No.2 seed Wang Qiang, who finished the 2018 season with six consecutive semifinals or better on Asian soil, is bidding for her first quarterfinal of 2019 in Asia today, and fifth overall. Opponent and former World No.38 Heather Watson, who picked up her second WTA main draw win of the year over Kateryna Bondarenko this week, is seeking her first Top 30 win since upsetting Anastasija Sevastova in the first round of Wimbledon 2017.

No.7 seed Zheng Saisai is looking to make her fifth quarterfinal of 2019, while Veronika Kudermetova is aiming for her sixth. Both players have won a 125K title this year - Kudermetova in Guadalajara in March, Zheng in Anning in April - and Zheng followed it in August with her maiden WTA trophy in San Jose.
