MATCH POINTS

2017 champion Peng Shuai defeated No.8 seed Kristyna Pliskova 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in their only completed match in the second round of Kuala Lumpur 2012; in their first-round clash this January, the former World No.14 was forced to retire at 3-3 in the final set due to a right thigh injury. Peng, who ended 2018 on a 10-match winning streak (14 including the 2019 Asia-Pacific Australian Open Wildcard Play-Off), would go on to lose nine of her first 10 matches of this season before qualifying and reaching the second round of the US Open.

No.4 seed Elena Rybakina faces Wang Xinyu for the first time in the pros. The pair played once in juniors, with Wang winning 7-5, 6-1 in the play-offs for 5th to 8th place in the 2017 ITF Junior Masters in Chengdu. A repeat of that result would now be the 17-year-old Chinese player's maiden Top 100 scalp and seal her debut WTA quarterfinal appearance.

For the second year running, Zhang Shuai is the No.1 seed in Nanchang and faces unseeded compatriot Zhu Lin in an all-Chinese derby. Zhu scored the upset in last year's quarterfinals 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1, but Zhang was a 7-5, 6-4 victor in their only other meeting, in the first round of Washington 2016.

Nina Stojanovic is aiming to reach her third WTA quarterfinal in as many main draws this season, having also reached that stage as a qualifier in both Nurnberg and Jurmala. The Serb is also on a six-match winning streak, having captured the ITF W60 title in Changsha last week. Her opponent, Samantha Stosur, is seeking to make her second quarterfinal this season after a last-eight run in Lausanne.
