No.2 seed and 2017 champion Donna Vekic takes on 2018 quarterfinalist Dalila Jakupovic for the second time today. The pair previously met in the semifinals of an ITF W25 event in Lagos in 2011, with a 15-year-old Vekic winning 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(1) to make her second ITF W25 final one week after the first, also in the Nigerian capital. The Croat would lose both of those finals - the first to Elina Svitolina and the second to Tamaryn Hendler.
Jennifer Brady defeated No.7 seed Zhang Shuai in their only previous encounter, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of Hong Kong in 2017. Brady has had a resurgent 2019, rising back into the Top 100 after ending 2018 at World No.116, and will be seeking her seventh Top 50 scalp of the season.
21-year-old Briton Naiktha Bains makes her WTA main draw debut via wildcard against No.1 seed Caroline Garcia today. The World No.226, who represented Australia until April, had previously lost in the final qualifying round of a WTA event on six occasions: Hobart 2014 and 2018, Nottingham 2016 and 2018, Nanchang 2018 and this year's Australian Open.
