Bianca Andreescu: The Canadian teenager kept the good vibes rolling into the second month of the year, having reached her first WTA final at the ASB Classic and won her first WTA 125K title at Newport Beach in January.
Andreescu arrived in Acapulco for the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL presentado por HSBC unseeded, but that didn't stop her en route to the semifinals, as she upset two seeds along the way.
The 18-year-old defeated No.4 seed Mihaela Buzarnescu in the second round, and followed that up with a straight-sets win over No.7 seed Zheng Saisai in the quarterfinals before falling to fellow rising star Kenin in a dramatic semifinal match.
Hsieh Su-wei: Hsieh reached the biggest semifinal of her career in Dubai, as she scored a series of impressive victories in the singles draw, and later won the doubles title alongside Barbora Strycova.
Hsieh started her week with a two-set win over No.10 seed Anastasija Sevastova, and following another win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich, she rallied from sets down against Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova to seal her place in the final four against Petra Kvitova.
She was even one set from the final, as she won the opener vs. the Czech, only to see the Australian Open champion rally to win a thriller.
Sofia Kenin: The 20-year-old American made her second career appearance in a WTA final, and second of the season, in Acapulco last week.
The Hobart International champion benefitted from reitrements by Rebecca Peterson and Katie Boulter in her first two rounds, but put in the hard yards to reach another singles final, as she outlasted both Victoria Azarenka and Andreescu in dramatic matches.
Against former World No.1 Azarenka in the quarterfinals, Kenin broke serve to stay in the match in a tense final set before winning in tense fashion, adding the two-time Grand Slam champion to an impressive list of wins in her young career.
Wang Yafan: Wang was a surprise winner in Acapulco, as the new Chinese No.4 won her first WTA title in the Mexican city in her first appearance in a singles final.
