MATCH POINTS

A first-round clash between former champions finds No.2 seed and last year's winner Julia Goerges going up against 2015 victor Misaki Doi. It is the first time two previous winners have met in Luxembourg since the 2001 semifinals, when 1999 champion Kim Clijsters defeated 1997 champion Amanda Coetzer 6-3, 6-4 en route to her second of five titles here. Goerges and Doi have played each other once before, in the first round of Seoul 2013, with Goerges winning 6-3, 7-5.

Doubles partners Margarita Gasparyan and Monica Niculescu, the 2016 champion, meet for the second time in an encounter between two of the most unique styles on the WTA Tour. Gasparyan was the victor in their previous match, also indoors, winning 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of last year's Limoges 125K.

Linz champion Coco Gauff and runner-up Jelena Ostapenko bid to continue their surges in tantalizing first encounters today: Gauff against No.8 seed Anna Blinkova, who broke the Top 70 after winning the New Haven 125K and reaching her maiden WTA semifinal in Guangzhou last month, and Ostapenko against Gauff's 18-year-old doubles partner and Washington semifinalist, Catherine McNally.

Former World No.55 Denisa Allertova saved a match point against Mandy Minella in the first round this week to score her first WTA main draw win since being sidelined for six months due to a back injury. The Czech, now ranked World No.247, is bidding to return to the last eight of a WTA tournament for the first time in exactly two years: her most recent quarterfinal was here in Luxembourg in 2016. Her opponent, 20-year-old No.3 seed Elena Rybakina, is looking to make her seventh quarterfinal of 2019.
