Hogenkamp was a big underdog in the match - not only did she have to save match points to make it through qualifying, but her opponent out-ranked her, No.25 to No.211, and was also the only former champion in the draw.

Hogenkamp made the most of her opportunity, though, getting the third set's only break at 4-3 and showing no nerves in serving out the final game at love for the 36 63 63 shocker. In the process, she withstood 15 aces from Goerges.

"Today I played without any pressure," the 20-year-old Hogenkamp said. " I tried to make it as tough as possible for her, and I'm happy I won."

The other seeds who completed their matches before rain suspended play for the second straight day - No.2 seed Yanina Wickmayer, No.4 seed Carla Suárez Navarro and No.7 seed Alizé Cornet - were victorious in straight sets.

Cornet came into Bad Gastein on the heels of a first round defeat to Zheng Jie at the French Open. However, the week before that she was the runner-up in Strasbourg - her best result in almost four years. On Tuesday, she scored a 75 75 triumph over Edina Gallovits-Hall.

"I was supposed to play yesterday and I waited the whole day. Finally I won in two sets today," Cornet said. "I'm pretty happy. I think it's going to be tough conditions all week, so I'll have to be ready."

In a match of note involving unseeded players, Estrella Cabeza Candela was a 36 63 63 winner over fellow Spaniard Laura Pous-Tio. Cabeza Candela had lost all three of their previous clashes, never getting more than three games in a set.

The remaining first round matches that either did not finish or did not get underway are scheduled for Wednesday.
