BAKU, Azerbaijan - Shahar Peer made sure the top half of the Baku Cup draw was seedless in eliminating third-seeded Chanelle Scheepers in second round action Thursday.

Former World No.11 Peer fell out of the Top 100 in February for the first time in almost eight years. However, she appears on the rise again after reaching her second WTA quarterfinal of the season two weeks ago in Budapest and now her third in Baku.

Peer had to work hard for her latest win, though, getting in a 62 31 hole before pulling out the second set, then from 3-3 in the third capturing the next three games for a 26 75 63 triumph.

Awaiting Peer in Friday's quarters is another player who survived a slow start, Tadeja Majeric. The Slovenian overcame a 5-1 first set deficit and four set points en route to a 76(5) 63 win. She had not won a WTA main draw match before this week, but now finds herself in her first WTA quarterfinal.

Also into her first WTA quarterfinal in just her second WTA main draw is qualifier Magda Linette, a 36 61 62 winner over Kristyna Pliskova. And Galina Voskoboeva was victorious in three sets to set up an encounter with No.4 seed Alexandra Cadantu.

Seventh-seeded 18-year-old Elina Svitolina saved eight of the nine break points against her in her 60 76(3) defeat of Nastassja Burnett to set up a tilt with fellow teen Donna Vekic. If she wins that, she will be in her second WTA semifinal a week after advancing to her first in Bad Gastein.

The doubles draw has been a bit less upset-stricken, as second-seeded Irina Buryachok and Oksana Kalashnikova and third-seeded Sandra Klemenschits and Andreja Klepac secured semifinal spots and the fourth-seeded Pliskova sisters made the quarterfinals.
