Stats Corner: 30-Somethings In Top 2
Serena Williams, Li Na

DOHA, Qatar - No matter how she did at the Qatar Total Open, Li Na will rise to a new career-high of No.2 next week. Like Serena Williams, Li continues to show age ain't nothing but a number - but exactly how many 30-somethings have been ranked in the Top 2 before? She'll be the seventh:

Virginia Wade
~ last ranked in Top 2 on January 31, 1976 (aged 30y/6m)

Billie Jean King
~ last ranked in Top 2 on February 12, 1978 (aged 34y/2m)

Chris Evert
~ last ranked in Top 2 on March 1, 1987 (aged 32y/2m)

Martina Navratilova
~ last ranked in Top 2 on October 17, 1993 (aged 36y/11m)

Venus Williams
~ last ranked in Top 2 on July 4, 2010 (aged 30y/0m)

Serena Williams
~ will be ranked No.1 on Monday (aged 32y/4m)

Li Na
~ will be ranked No.2 on Monday (aged 31y/11m)

Here's a bonus stat - with Williams and Li occupying the Top 2 spots on Monday, are they the first pair of 30-somethings to achieve that feat? They're not - Evert and Navratilova also achieved the feat for just over 19 weeks, from the day Navratilova turned 30 (October 18, 1986) to Evert's last day in the Top 2 (March 1, 1987). Do you know who bumped Evert out of the Top 2? Answer below...

Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova

The answer is, of course, Steffi Graf, who was just 17 years old at the time...
