No.3 seed Alison Van Uytvanck and Monica Niculescu have split two previous meetings, both in 2014, with Van Uytvanck winning their Wimbledon first round 7-5, 6-3 and Niculescu gaining revenge 6-3, 6-2 in Beijing qualifying. Niculescu is bidding to reach her first WTA quarterfinal since Shenzhen in January after an injury-afflicted season.

No.2 seed and defending champion Margarita Gasparyan lost to Danka Kovinic in their first two meetings, falling 6-3, 6-4 in Moscow qualifying in 2013 and 7-5, 6-3 in the 2015 Trnava ITF 100K final - but at the end of last year finally scored her first win over the Montenegrin 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-1 in the Mumbai 125K quarterfinals. Former World No.46 Kovinic is bidding to reach her first WTA quarterfinal since her semifinal run at Tianjin 2016.

No.7 seed and 2017 runner-up Timea Babos clashes with 2007 champion Pauline Parmentier for the fourth time. Babos took their first two meetings, in the first round of the 2014 Poitiers ITF 100K and the 2016 Rabat quarterfinals, in straight sets - but Parmentier was victorious in their only outdoor hardcourt encounter 6-7(1), 6-2, 6-0 in the first round of Miami last year.

No.5 seed and 2016 champion Kristyna Pliskova's second meeting with Jurmala runner-up Katarzyna Kawa comes over a decade after their first, in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Piestany ITF 10K event - won by Pliskova 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. Kawa and Budapest champion Alison Van Uytvanck are the only players remaining in the draw to have reached a WTA final already in 2019.
