In-form Goerges knocks Radwanska out of Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Julia Goerges scored her first Top 10 victory in over two years in the first round of the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday, knocking out World No.10 Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The German had lost her last four matches against Top 10 opposition since defeating then-No.5 Caroline Wozniacki

View Profile in the second round of the French Open in 2015, and earned her second win in five career meetings against Radwanska with the victory.

Goerges' last victory over the Pole came in the first round of the London Olympics in 2012, after Radwanska reached the final of Wimbledon and reached a career-high ranking of World No.2, but the World No.37 was on song for much of Tuesday's 98-minute victory on Stadium 3.

The big-serving German hit 12 aces in the match - including one on set point in the first set, and two in the final game of the match to emphatically clinch victory - and won 77 percent of points behind her first serve.

Goerges quickly sprinted out to a 3-0, two break lead in the opening set, only to see Radwanska quickly erase the deficit, as the Pole won four straight games to take her first lead of the match. 

However, the German quickly righted the ship to take the opening set, as she won the last three games to pocket a one-set lead, finishing emphatically with her fifth ace of the set. 

In a second set that largely went with serve, Goerges came up clutch when it mattered the most as Radwanska looked to work her way back into the match. 

The German saved all eight break points she faced in the second set, which included five in a seven-deuce game to tie the set at 3-3, and another three in a six-deuce affair to bring the action to 4-4.

With momenum firmly in her corner at that point, Goerges nabbed the first and only break for either player in the set in the eighth game, before putting an exclamation point on her win with her third hold at love of the afternoon.
