Gauff improved to 6-0 in opening matches at Roland Garros in her career with the win, her first-ever meeting against 23-year-old Gadecki, who cracked the Top 100 for the first time less than a year ago. After a humorous beginning to the affair in which she walked on court with an empty racquet bag, Gauff won the first three games of each set, and from 3-2 in the opener, won six straight games en route to the win.
Gauff, who admitted to usually feeling nervous ahead of her first-round match at a Grand Slam, said that the racquet snafu "took a load off."
"I knew the conditions were going to be difficult," she said of weather in high-50s Fahrenheit. "It's kind of one of those matches I went into knowing it wasn't going to be pretty tennis all the time. I think it just, with that mindset going in, it just makes you feel better necessarily when you aren't winning the points the way you kind of want to."
