This time last year, Margarita Gasparyan was ranked World No.1,117, but after a brilliant comeback year from three knee surgeries, the Russian is now the reigning Tashkent champion and ranked No.75.

Timea Babos is one of four past Monterrey champions in this year's draw; the Hungarian won her first of three singles titles to date in 2012, as a No.107-ranked 18-year-old competing in just her fourth WTA main draw.

2016 runner-up Kirsten Flipkens takes on 18-year-old Olga Danilovic for the first time, with the Serbian teenager bidding for her first WTA main draw win since Tashkent last September.

Two wildcards are in action today. World No.295 Victoria Rodriguez is competing in her fifth WTA main draw - and fourth as a local wildcard - and bidding for her first win at this level; on two previous occasions, the 23-year-old fell in a deciding tiebreak, to Yanina Wickmayer at Acapulco 2016 and to Ana Bogdan in Monterrey last year. World No.357 Giuliana Olmos is making her WTA main draw debut in singles; the 26-year-old University of Southern California graduate became the first Mexican player in the Open Era to reach a WTA final in doubles in Monterrey last year, and repeated the feat in Acapulco in February - both alongside Desirae Krawczyk.

In qualifying, former World No.71 Alexandra Panova is bidding to make her first WTA main draw since reaching the 2016 Bogota quarterfinals against 2017 Japan Women's Open runner-up Miyu Kato. The Russian won their only previous meeting 6-3, 6-2 in 2016 Wimbledon qualifying.
