ZÜRICH, Switzerland - Belinda Bencic, the World No.1 junior player and a rising star on the WTA, was named Newcomer Of The Year at the annual Credit Suisse Sports Awards in Zürich earlier this week.
Bencic has been making major waves all year, not just enjoying fantastic results in the juniors - she swept the French Open and Wimbledon titles - but also winning her first WTA main draw matches, reaching the second round of both Tokyo and Osaka. She's currently at a career-high No.183.
"Winning my first junior Grand Slam title in Paris was amazing, but also winning at Wimbledon was special," Bencic said. "My first main draw win on the WTA and the matches I've played against Grand Slam champions - Venus Williams, Petra Kvitova and Sam Stosur - are really special too."
And if who she has in her corner is anything to go by - she idolized Martina Hingis growing up, and she is being coached by her father and Hingis' mother, Melanie Molitor - there could be a lot more to come.
