PALERMO, Italy - No.8 seed Jil Teichmann became the first player through to the semifinals at the Palermo Ladies Open after Anna-Lena Friedsam retired from their quarterfinal match on Friday.

The Swiss had won all seven completed games before the German pulled the plug on the match due to a right adductor injury, with the scoreboard reading 6-0, 1-0 in favor of the No.8 seed.

"Unfortunately, Anna-Lena had to retire, so that's unfortunate from her side. From my side, I was playing very good. I had almost a perfect match," Teichmann said.

"In the games and the set we played, I'm very happy with my game. I played solid and aggressive, and that's the way I like it."

Prior to the German's retirement, it was a was a perfect start for the Swiss lefty in the match, as she dropped just one point behind her serve in four total service games, and broke Friedsam three times in the first set.

Teichmann, into her first semifinal since winning the J&T Banka Prague Open in April as a qualifier for her first career WTA title, will next face either last week's Ladies Open Lausanne champion Fiona Ferro of France or Russian lucky loser Ludmilla Samsonova.

"Samsonova, I don't know, but Ferro is my age, so I know her for years. I don't remember playing against her," Teichmann said.

"We practiced together this week, and she's in very good shape. She just came from winning Lausanne so it's going to be a hard match, but first they have to play each other."

Also advancing to the semifinals in the early afternoon in Palermo was Spain's Paula Badosa, as the 21-year-old booked her spot in her first WTA semifinal with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Arantxa Rus.
