Queen of the court: Vania King says farewell

WTA singles titlist and Grand Slam doubles champion Vania King retired from tennis on April 6th. Here are some of the highlights from her career.

The 32-year-old American star Vania King announced her retirement at the Volvo Car Open on April 6.

The California native King was an elite player in both singles and doubles, wining WTA titles in each discipline.

At just 17 years old, King captured a WTA singles title when she defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn in the 2006 Bangkok final.

King reached two other singles finals in her career, at 2013 Guangzhou and 2016 Nanchang. She reached a career-high ranking of World No.50 in 2006, and finished in the year-end singles Top 100 seven times.

King was one of the world's best doubles players, reaching a career-high ranking of No.3 during her partnership with Yaroslava Shvedova.

King and Shvedova won two Grand Slam doubles titles, in consecutive majors at Wimbledon (pictured) and the US Open in 2010. They were also finalists at the 2011 US Open.

King racked up 15 WTA doubles titles overall and reached 17 additional doubles finals on tour. She also teamed with Marcelo Melo to reach the mixed doubles final at 2009 Roland Garros.

An active philanthropist, King is heavily involved in charitable causes. Among those actions was spearheading a tennis and legal aid youth clinic in Uganda with Barefoot Law and WTA Charities in 2019.
