No.9 seed and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka will play wildcard Elena Rybakina for the first time at pro level. The pair met once in juniors, in the first round of a Grade 2 event in Budapest in 2014, with Sabalenka winning 6-3, 7-6(4). The 20-year-old Rybakina is contesting just her 11th WTA main draw, and has reached the last eight for the second time in as many Premier appearances following St Petersburg last year.

No.1 seed Ashleigh Barty and Petra Martic have played once before, in the third round of Miami 2018, won by Barty 6-4, 6-3. The Australian has reached her third consecutive Wuhan quarterfinal, having been runner-up in 2017 to Caroline Garcia and a semifinalist last year, falling to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. Martic is competing in her seventh quarterfinal of a career-best season; having never reached the last four of a Premier or higher event before this April, the Croat is now bidding for her fourth after reaching the Charleston and Birmingam semifinals and the Zhengzhou final.

Having captured her first Top 10 victory at the fourth attempt against No.2 seed Karolina Pliskova in the third round, 19-year-old Dayana Yastremska will attempt to get two in a row in her first meeting with two-time champion and No.5 seed Petra Kvitova. Yastremska is contesting the first quarterfinal at Premier level or above of her career, while Kvitova has made the last eight of a tounament for the first time since Madrid in May.

All three of No.3 seed Elina Svitolina's previous meetings with Alison Riske have gone to a deciding set - but Svitolina has won all of them, taking their 2012 Ismaning ITF 75K first round 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, their 2015 Stanford quarterfinal 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 and their 2015 Cincinnati first round 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Since the start of this year's grass season, Riske is 14-3 in three-set matches.
