Mary Pierce claimed her first Grand Slam title at the 1995 Australian Open, defeating Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the final. She would win her second major five years later, at 2000 Roland Garros.

Martina Hingis earned her first Grand Slam title at the 1997 Australian Open, beating Pierce in the final to become the youngest Grand Slam singles champion since 1887. It was the first of three consecutive Australian Open titles for Hingis.

Jennifer Capriati notched her first Grand Slam title at the 2001 Australian Open, defeating Hingis in the final. Capriati would also overcome Hingis in the 2002 final to successfully defend her crown.

Amelie Mauresmo won the first of her two career Grand Slam titles at the 2006 Australian Open. Mauresmo would win her second major later that year at Wimbledon, defeating Justine Henin in both of those finals.

Victoria Azarenka won her first Grand Slam singles title at the 2012 Australian Open, clinching the World No.1 ranking for the first time via that victory. Azarenka would execute a successful title defense in 2013 as well.

Angelique Kerber's run to her first Grand Slam title ended with a victory over Serena Williams in the 2016 Australian Open final. Kerber would also claim the US Open crown later that season and finish 2016 as the year-end World No.1.
