10 great moments: Monica Seles

Thirty years ago Monica Seles was in the midst of a 36-match winning streak that included victory in the 1990 tournament in Miami. Take a look back at a selection of other highlights from her superb WTA career.

Monica Seles exploded onto the WTA Tour aged 15 by reaching the semifinals of her first Grand Slam, the 1989 French Open, and finished the year World No.6.

In 1990, she enjoyed a 36-match winning streak, winning six successive tournaments, including a victory over World No.1 Stefanie Graf in the final of Berlin.

At the age of 16 years and 6 months, she became the youngest French Open winner, once again getting the better of Graf in the final.

She finished 1990 ranked World No.2, having won the Tour Championship with a five-set success over Gabriela Sabatini – the first women’s match to be played over that duration since 1901.

1991 was to prove a dominant year for Seles, who would end the season still aged 17. She won the Australian Open, French Open and US Open, while she did not play Wimbledon due to injury.

In March of that year, she replaced Graf as the World No.1. She would go on to spend 178 weeks at the top of the game – sixth on the all-time list.

The following year proved to be even more successful as she retained all her three major titles and reached the final of Wimbledon. She enjoyed a 55-1 record in Grand Slams during that time.

Seles continued to thrive in Melbourne, winning her third successive Australian Open singles title in 1993.

Seles courageously returned to the Tour in 1995 - after a shocking incident in which she was attacked by a spectator - winning the Canadian Open in 1995 before reaching the US Open final and clinching her fourth Australian Open in 1996.

Although she failed to maintain that blistering level, she would reach two more Grand Slam finals (1996 US Open) and (1998 French Open) while she picked up a bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics.
