Clijsters was a sensation from the start. In 1999, aged 16, she reached the Round of 16 in her Grand Slam main-draw debut at Wimbledon, won her first singles title in Luxembourg, and was named Newcomer of the Year.

In 2003, Clijsters reached World No.1 in both singles and doubles for the first time, with the twin achievements occurring a week apart. She won nine singles titles that season, including her second consecutive WTA Finals trophy.
